Introduction to S1000D: An Overview If you work in the technical publishing industry, you may have heard the buzz about S1000D. While it’s not exactly new, it’s still relatively unknown to many people, especially in the Indian Defence Technical Publishing segment. So, what is S1000D, and why is it such a big deal? S1000D stands for Interactive Electronic Technical Publishing (IETP) and is also known as IETM. It is an XML-based specification for creating technical documentation. It was mainly used in the aerospace industry a few years back, as it is governed by a Steering Committee formed by the Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA), ATA e-Business Program, and ASD. These organizations form the S1000D Council, making it more suitable for the aerospace industry.

  2. However, defense systems, including land, sea, and air products, civil aviation, and shipbuilding industries., have now adopted S1000D for their documentation activities. Now, the Indian Defense system is also considering adopting S1000D. Defining S1000D: So, what are the advantages of S1000D, and is it right for your organization?
