Alternative Topologies By: Linda Chau
Alternative Topologies • Hierarchical topology • Mesh topology • FDDI topology • Star-wired ring
Hierarchical Topology • Tree topology • Linear bus and star topologies • Allow expansion of an existing network
Hierarchical Topology • Advantages: • Point to point wiring • Widely supported
Hierarchical Topology • Disadvantages: • Segment length limited by cable type • Backbone failure – entire goes down • Difficult configurations and wiring
Mesh Topology • Point to point topology • High reliability
Mesh Topology • Advantages: • High demand • Self-healing capabilities • Multiplicity of paths • Disadvantage: • Expensive
FDDI Topology • Fiber Distributed Data Interface
FDDI Topology • Advantages: • Fiber optic cable at 100 Mbps • Point-to-point wiring • Support multiple tokens • Redundant circuit • 200 km – maximum distance
FDDI Topology • Disadvantage: • Expensive • Requires extra fiber-optic interface • Limited scalability • Maximum 1,000 connections (500 nodes)
Star-Wired Ring • Star topology
Star-Wired Ring • Advantages: • Easy to install and wire • No disruption to network • Easy to detect faults and remove parts
Star-Wired Ring • Disadvantages: • More cable length • If hub or concentrator fail - nodes disabled • Expensive
Summary • All are point-to-point topologies • Generally expensive to implemented • Higher performance • Star-wired ring • FDDI • Greater reliability • FDDI • Greater flexibility • Star-wired • Hierarchical
