Part IIRecognize Volunteer Life Cycle in Planning Volunteer Assignments & Utility
Life Cycle Stages • Recruitment • Registration & Integration • Assessment, Support & Training • Retention & Recognition • Succession Planning
Recruitment • Identify potential leaders right away to help recruitment and hopefully, in all of the subsequent stages • Recruitment is ongoing/continual • Make your mission/goals clear in hopes of finding people who get excited by it and want to share it • Solicit participation by as many groups as possible
Recruitment • Logical sources of volunteers • Clubs • Civic organizations • Local community • Seek some volunteer veterans • Seek sponsors • Businesses • Land Owners/Land Managers • Organizations • Individuals: • Financial • In-Kind
Registration & Integration • Registration • Contact Information • Emergency Contacts • Certifications • i.e: Chain saw, CPR, First Aid, etc. • Integration • Develop team/family culture • Identify champions & crew leaders • Planning meetings should be as inclusive as possible
Assessment, Support & Training • Skill levels of all volunteers need to be realistically assessed • For proper assignments • Be careful not to assign complex tasks to unproven volunteers • Have training resources available before workdays • Lists of online materials, books, pamphlets, videos, formal classes, etc. available to volunteers • Support and Training includes proper mentoring • Encouragement and correcting through constructive criticism versus scolding
Retention & Recognition • Solicit the champions help in organizing volunteers and the program • Annual awards dinner • Most hours worked, etc. • Newsletters, press releases/coverage in local publications • Pins, tee-shirts, hats
Succession Planning • Recognize you’ll lose volunteers at levels in life cycle: • Disenchanted, injuries, changing personal priorities, relocations • Need to shift assignments among remaining volunteers accordingly • Involve champions in planning • To the extent practical, let them do recruitment also • Completes cycle with more, really constant recruitment • Database of retirees/mentors as a resource for new volunteers
