    2. Written by Jhumpa Lahiri (1999). The story takes place in Massachusetts in 1971. Lahiri won a 2000 Pulitzer Prize for The Interpreter of Maladies, the collection in which the story was published.

    3. Lahiri was born in London, moved to the U.S. at age three, and grew up in Rhode Island. She is of Bengali Indian descent. Her parents were born and raised in India, where she travelled several times as a child. She currently lives in New York.

    4. Historical Background: 1947: India ceased to be a British colony and gained independence. India and Pakistan were partitioned. India was officially a secular state and Pakistan was an Islamic state.

    5. 1971: After months of violence and twelve days of war, East Pakistan separated from West Pakistan. East Pakistan became Bangladesh.
