Reading lists @ Stirling SCURL Community of Practice July 2013 Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Background • 2003/4 Sentient Discover pilot • 2004 trial of TalisList • Our model is a Central Service Model with library staff creating lists • Range of staff involved in creation and management of reading lists • Documentation, guides, policies, workflows, templates for emails Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Growing like Topsy • Autumn 2005 semester 89 lists (just 3 created by academic staff) • Autumn 2006, 130 lists • Currently 311 lists in ASPIRE, approximately half of all modules Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Benefits • Increased contact and communication with staff. With academics and with CELD colleagues in Information Services. • Know what students are expected to read and equally importantly what they are to purchase • We have a better chance of getting the material in the library • Sweating our assets, for example increased our use of the CLA digitisation licence • 359 in 2009 • 1289 in 2013 Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Issues • Costs • £3525 for TalisList in 2005 • £18360 for the current subscription to ASPIRE • Staff • No additional staff • Scalability? • Alternatives - RebusList Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Challenges • Involving academics • Production of lists • Negotiation of size of lists (QEC recommendations) • Integration with existing workflows • Managing expectations – ours and academics • IT – issues with browsers, integration with our VLE –Blackboard • Student issues – difficulty using Aspire – libguide created Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
Future • Roll-over – in Spring 2014 • More academics doing updates to list – pilot of 6 academics this semester • Funding • Further integration with existing University systems e.g. with • OPAC Lisa Haddow & Valerie Wells
