AFRICA NOTES • THE BEST NOTES EVER! • Even Ikenna will like these notes!
Africa had long been controlled by European countries under a colonialist system.
After WWII nationalist movements started all over Africa. Second class treatment was no longer acceptable.
During the next 30 years over 50 new nations were created in Africa.
A major problem with the new independent countries was that they still used the old borders the Europeans established.
This has led to civil wars in places like Ethiopia, Sudan, Rwanda and others.
Jomo Kenyatta led the movement for independence in his land by using “violent” means. Their group was known as the Mau Mau.
They became the most industrialized nation in East Africa and made money from tourism. (seeing lions, elephants etc.)
In the nation of South AfricaAfrikaners, descendents of the Dutch, controlled the government.
They ruled under a system of Apartheid. Segregation, keeping the races separate, was the law.
Blacks, Asians and coloureds (those racially mixed) had to move into “homelands”.
Desmond Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize for advocating peaceful change in S. Africa.
Nelson Mandela was jailed for almost 30 years for being a leader the African National Congress.
Nelson Mandela would eventually be freed. Apartheid was abolished and Mandela became president of S. Africa.
African nations still face many serious issues today that must be dealt with. They include:
Among them… • Overall poverty • Illiteracy • Civil War • Child Soldiers • A lack of technology • Deforestation • Dictatorships • AIDS • Genocide
