Part 3: Literary Elements • Be able to recognize examples of these elements
Allusion • Reference to a statement, person, a place, or events from: -Literature -History -Religion -Mythology -Politics -Sports
Characterization • Antagonist- A major character who opposes the protagonist (does not change)-types of antagonist(-people-nature-society) • Dynamic- Changes as a result of the story’s events • Foil- • Static- Does not change
Foreshadowing • Clues the writer puts in the story to give the reader a hint of what is to come.
Hyperbole • Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Imagery/ Sensory Image • Language that appeals to the senses • Touch • Taste • Sight • Sound • Smell Example: Creating a picture in the readers mind through description
Metaphor • A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
Onomatopoeia • Sound word Crash Quack Boom Zoom
Oxymoron • A figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g., faith unfaithful kept him falsely true).
Point of View • Vantage point from which the writer tells the story. • First person: One of the characters is telling the story using the pronoun “I” • Third person: Centers on one character’s thoughts and actions • Omniscient: All knowing narrator. Can center on the thoughts and actions of any and all charecters
Pun • A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.
Simile • A comparison using like or as
Theme • The central message or insight into life revieled through literary work
