  1. XCELL – Available from Silicon Engineering SMF Generator Starting Unit

  2. What is the Power requirement in a Diesel Generator Set ? • Starting System: Power required to initiate the rotation of engine shaft (Torque) – High Currents for shorter duration • Ignition System: Power is supplied to the coil for ignition • Charging System: Engine is coupled to the ALTERNATOR which will generate EMF to charge the battery.

  3. Existing System • Conventional Flooded Battery / Low Maintenance LA • Requires Maintenance (specific gravity checks and top-up) • Charging through Alternator: • Needs to run the DG set periodically to charge the battery • High voltage requires frequent topping - up

  4. Requirements of an Engine Starting battery • High cranking current capability with minimum voltage drop • Ability to crank cold engines • Good low temperature performance • Excellent recharge capability • No emission of corrosive fumes • Long Shelf and Cycle life

  5. “ Xcell” – Generator Starting Battery A RELIABLE COST EFFECTIVE MAINTENANCE FREE UNINTERRUPTED DC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM FOR GENERATOR SETS

  6. Xcell – Generator Starting System Pure Lead Power Pack Pure Lead Tin Battery along with in-built SMPS charger (Switch Mode Power Supply) PLT Battery : Capable of delivering high currents for shorter durations which are required to start the engine SMPS Charger: Replenishes the energy drawn by the battery and keeps the battery at 100% SOC

  7. “ PLT - Pure Lead Tin Battery for Engine Starting Application” Why? The instantaneous power / energy required to start an engine will be delivered from the electrode surface area. More thin electrodes in same volume will deliver high cranking currents.

  8. PLT Battery • Corrosion-resistant alloy • Thin plate design • High-grade raw materials • Recombinant VRLA design – works on “Gas Recombination Principle” • 100% rated capacity from very first cycle onwards

  9. PLT Batteries • First introduced in the mid 1980’s • Fully established by mid 1990’s • Made only by • Hawker / Enersys (UK) • Optima (USA) – very limited range for SLI • HBL Power Systems (India) – very wide range

  10. PLT Batteries – Superior Features • High Discharge Rates • Peak powers are of the order of 25 times the C20 Capacity • Quick recharge capability – Low Internal Resistance • Wide operating temperature range (-40 to 50°C) • Less space and weight • Low self discharge, long shelf life due to low internal resistance • Designed to meet vibrations

  11. Cranking currents – A comparison

  12. Parameter 20 Ah 32 Ah 80 Ah 100 Ah CCA at –18°C (Amps) 400 480 800 1100 HCA at 27°C (Amps) 500 750 1200 1500 Cranking currents of Xcell Models

  13. SMPS Charger • Input : AC 230V, Single Phase • Operating voltage window : 150 – 320V • Output Voltage : DC 13.7V / 27.6V • Output Current : 5 amps / 10 amps • Output voltage regulation : +/ - 1% • Protections : 1) Input protection from spikes and surges • 2) Output short-circuit protection • 3) Battery reverse polarity protection • Ripple content : Less than 3%

  14. Xcell Sizing • Current required to start the genset engine depends on following: • Starter motor rating • Efficiency of starter motor • Resistance offered by the engine as a result of viscosity of the • engine oil depending on its temperature • Ambient temperature • No. of starts & each crank duration

  15. Xcell Selection Guide Xcell Model Genset Rating (KVA) XCL 12V 2000 15, 20, 25 XCL 12V 3200 30, 40, 50, 62.5, 82.5, 100, 125 XCL 24V 2000 50, 62.5, 70, 100, 110, 125, 140 XCL 24V 3200 160 to 500 XCL 24V 8000 590, 625, 750 XCL 24V 10000 1000 to 1250 Above Selection is made without considering the auxiliary loads like AMF panel, electronic controls etc..

  16. Advantages with Xcell • No Initial Filling and Charging • Self – Discharge is Less • - Does not require to run the DG set to charge the battery (or) • - Does not require any separate equipment to charge the battery. • No Terminal corrosion and wear out • Power consumption is less even it is continuously connected to AC power supply • More Reliable start even at low temperatures • More Number of starts with a single charge
