High peaks cut off valleys and plains from one another. • The Pindus Mountains form a barrier between the east and west sections of the mainland. • Water shapes the land regions of Greece. • Long arms of the sea reach into the coasts, forming many peninsulas. • Greece's hundreds of islands together make up about 20 percent of the country. • Greece has nine main geographic regions.
