Le Passé Simple. French Literary Past Tense. Formation – ER verbs. Drop the –er, add the following endings: ai as a âmes âtes èrent. EX: regarder – I watched: Je regardai. Aller – no longer the exception.

  2. Formation – ER verbs • Drop the –er, add the following endings: • ai • as • a • âmes • âtes • èrent EX: regarder – I watched: Je regardai

  3. Aller – no longer the exception • Normally, the verb « aller » is irregular, but in the passé simple, it is regular! ZUT! • allai • allas • alla • allâmes • allâtes • allèrent

  4. Formation – IR and –RE verbs • Drop –ir or –re from verbs, add the following endings: • is • is • it • îmes • îtes • irent EX: We blush Nous rougîmes

  5. Irregulars – avoir and être • AVOIR ETRE J’eus je fus Tu eus tu fus il/elle/on eut il/elle/on fut Nous eûmes Nous fûmes Vous eûtes Vous fûtes Ils/Elles eurent Ils/Elles furent *Remember endings: us, us, ut, ûmes, ûtes, urent; avoir’s first letter is E, etre’s is F.

Irregulars – Faire and Dire • FAIRE DIRE je fis je dis tu fis tu dis il/elle/on fit il/elle/on dit nous fîmes nous dîmes vous fîtes vous dîtes ils/elles firent ils/elles dirent *Remember endings: is, is, it, îmes, îtes, irent; faire’s first letter is F, dire’s is D. ** FAIRE vs. ÊTRE (FIS VS. FUS- faire has an I in it!)

  7. Venir – Totally Irregular, no pattern • je vins • tu vins • il/elle/on vint • nous vînmes • vous vîntes • ils/elles vinrent

  8. Some irregulars used in stories • Naître – to be born: • Il naquit • Vivre – to live: • Il vécut • Mourir – to die: • Il mourut
