The Medieval Manor The Economy of the Middle Ages
Manorialism • Everything that the group needs is produced on the manor • Serfs/Peasants grew the good • Peasants made items in the village (blacksmiths, bakers, carpenters, etc.) • It was too dangerous to rely on trade • “Manors” were settled in places that had good resources • Good soil • Good forest • Water
IMPORTANT POINT: a FIEF could have more than one manor settlement on it
The Economy Today • Today we have “capitalism” • Citizens own businesses to make a profit • Businesses make the goods we want/need • International free trade gets the goods to us • Our society is safe and secure enough to allow free trade
Problems with Manorialism • Hard to get some goods (there was a small amount of trade) • Bad Harvests = starvation • Back-breaking work done by serfs/peasants • Little trade = little money for education, etc. • Unfair distribution of work and wealth
Castles • A manor or fief usually had one • Protective building for nobles/knights • Place of refuge for all people on a manor during a siege • Also served as a house/living space for the lord
