About the Survey • Four main topics • Current employment and hiring situation (Q1 thru Q5) • Key occupations (Q6 thru Q8) • Training and education needs (Q9 thru Q12) • Engagement (Q13)
Survey Sample Responses • Survey conducted during late 2010/Early 2011 • 6 respondents • All from firms with “100 to 499” employees • Respondent industries were largely biotechnology-based, including medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing
5 of 6 firms hired this year • Two firms (each in “100 to 499” range) hired 25 or more new employees • Vacancies Remain Limited • Two firms reported having 15 or more employment vacancies at the present time • Four firms reported having nine or less vacancies.
Few Retirements anticipated • 25 expected retirements (as reported from the sample) for the next five years • Retirements were spread evenly among companies • One respondent did not answer the question
High School Diploma Valued • 5 of the 6 firms identified a high school degree as necessary for entry-level, front-line positions • HS degree not always sufficient, as several firms noted other additional qualifications
Firm Concerns • Employer-Identified Workforce Challenges • Great Need: “Lab Technicians”, “MFG/Process Operators”, “Production Technicians” • Respondents also identified various researchers and engineers • Great Difficulty Hiring: “Managers” • Respondents also identified various engineers as being difficult for hiring • Greatest Difficulty Retaining: Microbiologists and various engineers • Retention is generally not of greatest concern
