Innovation Crescent Regional Partnership Innovation Crescent Marketing Initiative, the regional coalition that is dedicated to supporting the future growth of Georgia’s life sciences. • Comprised of 13 economic development entities and Chambers of Commerce • Major accomplishment – financial contribution for development of marketing materials, logo and website and presentation for BIO 2008 in San Diego • All entities represented the IC in San Diego • Formalizing structure with a 501c3 • Strategy now for BIO 2009 in Atlanta

Georgia Bio will hold its first Life Science Workforce Forum 2008: A Catalyst for Transforming Georgia’s Bioscience Talent • Monday, November 17, at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The event will begin at 1:00 pm with a keynote address by David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., former CDC Director, Surgeon General, and President of Morehouse School of Medicine. • The November Forum is intended to bring together pre- and post-secondary educators, employers, and economic developers to communicate current and future issues and challenges in developing the workforce to grow the life sciences sector in Georgia.
Education/Career Pathway Committee • Focused on BioTechnology Career Pathways and development of Bio Science tasks for middle schools • Supported by the Community Based Job Training Grant to increase LS capacity at Gwinnett Technical College and Athens Technical College • Supported by local school systems and teachers who are committed to bio science curriculum
Biotechnology Career Pathways - Goals • Implement new high school biotechnology career pathway courses • Increase biotechnology exposure in 7th, 8th and 9th grade science classes in target high schools and feeder middle schools • Develop articulation agreements between 2+2+2 programs • Evaluate and improve training and implementation plans

Biotechnology Career Pathways Status • High school courses • CTAE Biotech R&D Pathway being piloted in Barrow and Walton County • Biotechnology Science Elective to pilot in Gwinnett County (Central Gwinnett and Brookwood HS) and DeKalb County • All courses planned to launch fall 2009 • Teachers are meeting with expert trainer to coordinate plans, equipment, albs, best practices, etc. • Finding interest from other counties (in and out of IC)
Biotechnology Career Pathways Status • Tasks for Existing Science Curricula • Developed by Committee funded by GDOE and USG BOR • Five tasks and one culminating task for 7th grade life science and HS biology • Aligning with Georgia company context statement • Will be posted on GDOE website with curriculum framework • Teacher training session begins Oct. 4
