  3. History • Lecture: The medieval and modern history of Spain and Barcelona • Lecture: Assessing the impact of the Spanish Civil War on contemporary Spanish and Catalan Culture (Dr. Carles Murillo) • Visit to El Refugi

  5. Interesting facts from history lectures: • Catalonia has its own immigration policy • Must speak Catalan to become a citizen • Soccer reflects politics (Real Madrid v. FC Barcelona) • “If the Allies wanted to save Europe from fascism, maybe they should have looked to Spain.” Dr. Carles Murillo in reference to the Republicans just prior to and during the Spanish Civil War

Spanish Literature • Lecture and discussion led by Dr. Adriana Patino • From medieval texts to Federico Garcia Lorca • Worked in pairs analyzing the texts and then reported to the whole group • My partner had an Ipad so we “cheated” a little but found great context for our poem • Our poem: Juan del Encina- “Ay Triste, QueVengo” • Beautiful poem about unrequited love • Author was a converso, originally Jewish
