Aims – Current Myths & Realities! (A) Context– Oxbridge Policy & Philosophy at TGGS (B) Delegate feedback – True or False?! (C) Data & Conclusions - review of the last four years of Oxbridge experiences at TGGS (D) Advice - three key myths I seek to dispel amongst my prospective Oxbridge students (E) Questions & Discussion
TGGS Oxbridge Policy • Ethos: ‘Dare to be wise’ • Three way ‘selection’: students, staff, parents • Not for everyone: ‘better’/other Universities & Courses (e.g. Dentistry) – individual student key • Professional preparation/attitude vital:’: seminars, mentoring, reading & research • Philosophical but reflective about outcome …
(B) Delegate feedback – True or False?! • Candidates need at least eight GCSE A*sto get into Oxbridge • It is possible to get an Interview at Oxbridge with only one A* at GCSE • Strategic decisions regarding choice of Subject & College can still increase a student’s chance of Oxbridge success • A very strong BMAT or LNAT performance can compensate for ‘indifferent’ GCSE or AS grades • A student who achieves UMS scores of 90% plus in at least one relevant AS subject will increase their chances of Oxbridge success
(C) Data & Conclusions Analyse the TGGS Oxbridge data over the last FOUR years. What trends can you identify in terms of the profile of successful & unsuccessful candidates? Consider: • GCSE results • AS grades & AS UMS scores • Other factors
(1) ‘Lottery’ versus a portfolio of past achievements & future potential - transparency & meritocracy
3. ‘There is no magic formula’: after 28 years: given potential success is possible, attitude isthe‘x’ factor! 3 Key Qualities … • Arrogance v misplaced lack of confidence • Complacency v anxiety • Complete lack of receptivity to advice v utter dependence on others So … • Confidence with humility • Effective focus • Independent learning skills – TEACHABILITY
