  4. Pearl of Wisdom Campaign to Prevent Cervical Cancer • Cervical cancer is the second leading cancer in women worldwide. Approximately 500,000 women are diagnosed annual and about nearly 300,000 of the die. • This year in the U.S., more than 12,200 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 4,210 women will die of the disease (American Cancer Society). • Every 47 minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with cervical cancer – a preventable disease. • Many more women will lose their fertility or experience pregnancy complications as a result of treatment for cervical cancer or cervical disease. Pearl of Wisdom Campaign to Prevent Cervical Cancer Who we are: • A united, global effort to raise awareness of the opportunities now available to prevent cervical cancer • Started in Europe by the European Cervical Cancer Association (approximately 100 organizations) • Launched in the U.S. in January 2009 • Led by Tamika & Friends, a national nonprofit organization focused on cervical cancer awareness • Partners now include more than two dozen national women’s health and advocacy organizations

  16. Pearl of Wisdom Campaign to Prevent Cervical Cancer Top 10 Things We Want Women to Know: 2. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common infection that you can get from intimate sexual contact. Most adults will have HPV at some point in their lives.

Having HPV does not mean you will get cervical cancer.Most HPV infections go away on their own, without symptoms or treatment. When HPV infections don’t go away, they can cause cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine protects against the two types of HPV that cause about 70% of cervical cancers.The vaccines are recommended for girls 11 to 12 years old, and are approved for girls and young women up to age 26.

Even if you have had the HPV vaccine, you still need to be tested for cervical cancer.The HPV vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV that cause cervical cancer.
