  2. Description Louisa May Alcott Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist and poet born in 1832 in Pennsylvania. Raised in New England, she was familiar with many of the famous writers of the time, including Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau and Longfellow. Sometimes using the pen name, A. M. Barnard, she wrote novels for young adults and penned her most famous work, Little Women, in 1868 and 1869. She was an abolitionist and a feminist and remained unmarried throughout her life. She died from a stroke, two days after her father died, in Boston in 1888. She wrote a number of novels in her lifetime.
