What is Engagement? • Real family engagement is data-driven and can be translated into increased student achievement. • 20+ years of research shows family engagement leads to improved student achievement. • Gains for all students regardless of socioeconomic status, cultural background, or special education status. (Fan & Chen, 2001; Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1997; Clark, 1993)
It is About Relationships • The school must nurture relationships with all families and then give them tools to participate in their children’s education.
Barriers to Family Engagement • Fear • How do we eliminate fear and build trust? • Isolation • How do we go from “That School” to “Our School”? • Assumptions • It is not what you say; it’s what you do. • Values • I value your opinion! Well, maybe. • Attitudes • Negative experiences usually equal negative attitudes.
Family Engagement Culture Quiz • Are all families treated with respect by everyone at your school? • Are all families seen as a potential source of valuable expertise? • Do all staff take personal responsibility to engage families? • Do all staff believe that student performance can be improved with family engagement? • Is active family engagement met with enthusiasm by the entire staff?
Four Domains of Family Engagement • Welcoming Environment • Approachability of administration and staff • Inviting atmosphere • Effective two-way communication • We have it going out, but do we encourage it coming in? • Strive for simple and effective means for families to communicate and respond. • The degree of engagement • Set goals for reaching all families and the objectives associated with engagement. • School support for home learning • Help families see themselves as effective partners with the school. They have the power to create positive change in their children’s learning.
