  4. West Nile Virus • Symptoms: Fever, headache, stiff neck • Risk factors: being outside • Transmission: • Infected mosquitos, mother-child, transplant, transfusions • Prevention: • Mosquito control • Treatment: • Treat symptoms

  5. Parkinson’s Disease • Characterized by tremors, shuffling gait and pin rolling • Cause: • Decrease of neurotransmitter dopamine • Treatment: • L-dopa control symptoms • Not cure

  6. Neuritis • Inflammation of nerve • Symptoms: • Severe pain, burning and tingling • Cause: • Infection, chemical or chronic alcoholism • Treatment: • Pain killers

Multiple Sclerosis • Immune cells attack and destroy myelin sheath of axon and leave scar tissue • Blocks transmission • No known cure • Diagnosis based on symptoms • Symptoms • Weakness and numbness of extremities loss of coordination paralysis • Age 20-40 2/3 female • May have remission Treatment: • Inteferon and avonex slows prognoses rest

Cerebral Palsy • Decrease in voluntary muscle action due to brain damage. • Cause: • Unknown • May be birth injury • Symptoms: • Increased muscle tone • Overactive reflexes • Lask of coordination of voluntary movements • Foot drag • Drooling • Speech difficulties • Tremor or other uncontrolled movements • No intellect impairment
