Part 2 Issues Jim Carpenter June 24, 2001
Issues • Name of part 2 • Focus of part 2 • Purpose/uses of classification • Context of definition: connection to scheme & concept system? • Definition & term for our concept of classification scheme • How to classify CSs and why? • Guidance on CS type description • Context vs. Subject • Concept of overlapping CS items • Guidance on CS item type name • Guidance on CS relationship type description • Referencing implementations
Suggested Names of Part 2 • Classification for metadata registries • Classification of administered items • Data management classification • Consensus was: Classification • qualifier names put in context: • Information Technology - Metadata Registries (MDR) - Part 2: Classification
Focus of Part 2 • Focus of CS in Metadata Registries: registering and using CSs to classify admin. items • Not standard for generic classification systems • Gives us more freedom to specify within our own context • Not all types of CSs are of interest to 11179??? • Leave it to the registrar (Registry target community) • meta structure of CS should be the thing that’s tailored to 11179 • Not meant as standard protocol for all registry features
Purpose/Use of CSs • Find • Put • Add attributes
Context of definition • Type of “scheme” which focuses of grouping • Scheme is any type of documentation addressing the 6 interrogatives • The “meta objects” in a CS are any of the objectified interrogatives • Type of “Concept System” • This extension does not conflict with Part 3 • Tie in to Terminology standards
How to classify CSs & Why • Most useful attributes for classifying are • Structure • Could be “CS type” • Subject • new attribute: not the same as “context” which has roles in designation and definition • Why • Guidance on CS type name • Finding particular CS • Understanding CSs in Part 2
