  1. Slide info Slides 5 – 6 – goes through what a rationale is and why the students need to write one. Slide 7 - Class discussion to write a check list of what would be included in a good rationale, then compare with a given example. Slide 8 – 9 - goes through what makes a typical rationale and the assessment for it. The students will be assessed at LO2 for this section. Activity Slide 11 – students to complete a word document to help them think of what to write for their rationale. They will then write up their rationale in their project documents using the work they have just completed. Lesson info This lesson is to get the students to come write up their rationale. This applies for both the investigation and artefact projects. The students do find this section hard. Get the students to think about what they need to help achieve their aims and how are they going to do this (plan and methodology). Homework – due in next lesson To make sure that the aims and objectives are completed so that they can be checked. Teacher ONLY slide This lesson is for both investigation and artefact projects

  2. Year 11Lesson 9 Writing your Rationale

  3. Learning outcomes To understand the requirements of a rationale To identify what would be included in a good rationale

  4. Plan

  5. What is a rationale? • “A set of reasons or a logical basis for a course of action or belief.” • Source Google • So a research rationale will be what?

  6. Why do you need a rationale? To help develop an understanding of what needs to be done and how it will be done. To help identify any issues with areas of research- i.e lack of information, access to information issues. To consider what resources are required and the availability of these resources. What methods are you going to use? Primary and Secondary research? What are you intending to do? Why did you choose these methods? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods?

  7. What would makes a good rationale?

  8. Structure of a typical rationale • What will you do? • How will you do it? • What resources will you need? • Why have you chosen to do it this way? • What will the data look like? • How will this help you? Think about your aims – what do you need to do to achieve your aims and how are you going to do it?

  9. Linking to the criteria – why do you need to write a rationale? Take a look at the IP assessment criteria

  10. Progress check If I don’t do a rationale my aims and objectives will lack structure and detail Research may lack planning and foresight to identify problems What are the risks of NOT completing a rationale before you undertake a piece of research?

  11. Activity • Open the word document “Lesson 9_Rationale” Located in: stresources – Welsh Bacc – Welsh Bacc Year 11 – Individual Project • Complete the questions on the worksheet. This is only a guide – think about your aims – what do you need to do to achieve your aims and how are you going to do it?

  12. Extension Activity(Original Worksheet located in stresources – Welsh Bacc – Welsh Bacc Year 11 – Individual Project ) • Open your the word document “Individual Project” or “Artefact Individual Project” • Check that you have completed the following tasks from your previous lessons: • Write your name and Tutor group in the header • Add your title to the front sheet and images that represent your title • Write your introduction to your project 3. AIMS AND OBJECIVES TASK : • Transfer your aims and objectives from your lesson 8 worksheet to your project document. • Ask a peer to see if your aims and objectives will help you investigate your project title. • Make an changes that you and your peer think is needed
