The SABRE Project is just starting • One month ago, we moved into refurbished offices • Since then, much has been accomplished • Today, briefly, I’ll provide an executive summary of the project
There is much to describe about the SABRE Project • The handout provides: • The Project mission statement • The Project’s team membership • The Web Site address for the Project’s informational web site • Please feel free to contact me after you’ve reviewed this material
The SABRE Project will result in transformed Student Information Systems • Today’s session will illustrate what that means, and the resources to be used to accomplish that goal
What will be different when the SABRE project is completed? • Many things! For example, • Student registration will no longer be limited to in-person, batch processed systems • Instead, students will be able to register using a Web-based approach from remote (home) or on-campus computers
What will be different when the SABRE project is completed? • Student Information Services will no longer be a maze for students • Instead, amazing things will be possible, for example: • personal information updates on line • electronic “rain checks” for closed classes • accurate on line listing of “holds”
What will be different when the SABRE project is completed? • Data will be accessible in new ways • Web-based, streamlined campus activities will be available for students, faculty, staff and administrators • New types of interactive planning can take place
This project will be accomplished through a major commitment on the part of Buffalo State College to: • Commit a team of ten full time, three part time and one staff assistant • Contract with Oracle (software and database development company)to write the software to make these changes happen • Involve campus Computing Services throughout the project
Each of the following areas are represented on the SABRE team: • Admissions (Undergraduate and Graduate) • Financial Aid • Graduate Studies • Registrar • Student Accounts • Services in all five of these areas will be transformed through this project
These student information services(or enrollment management units)are already working together in new ways
What is the SABRE Project team timeline? • 1999-2000: Gather information and ideas from BSC while Oracle programmers develop software • 2000-2001:Pilot test the web-based software • 2001-2002: While students, faculty, and staff use the new software, the Project team will finalize on-going support for SABRE, before returning to their respective units
Ideally, the SABRE team will enable our campus to reach long-sought goals
What is the SABRE Project team currently doing? • Studying current business practices in each of the units involved • Evaluating current reports and work flow • Informing the campus (via presentations at the College Senate, Campus Kick off events, Informational Web site) about the project • Soliciting ideas and information from many on campus (staff, faculty, students)
What kind of involvement do we seek from the campus? • Enthusiasm or • The benefit of the doubt or • Healthy skepticism • Nevada Barr’s distinction between a skeptic and an embittered person: humor and hope
What can the campus expect SABRE team members to do? • Keep a fast, steady pace throughout the project • Keep the campus involved and informed • Learn more about the needs of the campus and the possibilities of reengineering
What else can the campus expect SABRE team members to do? • Communicate with the campus leaders throughout the project • Involve students, faculty and staff throughout the project • Avoid belly flops
What won’t the team members on the Project do? • Go off the high dive too soon -- in other words, SABRE project team members will not: • Rely on an untested system • Expect people to do new work without sufficient preparation and training
Who are the SABRE Life Guards? • SABRE Steering Committee • College Senate (Steering Committee liaison and three Senators on the SABRE team) • Student Information Services Unit Directors • Sponsoring Vice President
Members of the SABRE team plan to work as a team, bringing: • Enthusiasm • Energy • Willingness to learn
