Agenda - September 9, 2008 • College Effectiveness Council Environmental Scanning • Once the academic year is underway, College Effectiveness Council looks at environmental trends within and outside of the College, including performance data and reports from workgroups on student success (these performance data and reports are available on the CEC intranet site) • Kim Faris presented the Fall 2008 Preliminary Enrollment Report which is attached • Fall Status Reports on Planning Objectives • Unit managers are asked to enter status reports into SPOL three times during the year – this first status report should be a reflection on early progress towards meeting objectives and on experiences from the Summer semesters – unit managers will use student success and/or other data to analyze preliminary results • CEC members participated in a SPOL activity “Creating a Performance Objective in SPOL”

Threats Decrease in # of HS graduates Population growth is in areas where college has not been a tradition/expectation Male/female ratio is getting wider What external trends are influencing Male (military?) Female (healthcare trng?) HS students are not currently in a “college-going” culture State funding is declining Drop in median age creates need for a different set of services, activities, & expectations “Helicopter” parents South Campus growth may be threatened by the slowing population migration Jobs that are being created do not require college or significant training Core curriculum requirements will be lowered by the state Hours needed for bachelor’s degrees is decreasing, reducing the # of hrs our students can transfer Opportunities Recruit those who are not graduating (GED, etc.) Economy is unstable = enrollment growth Increase in Native American students (partnership with Choctaw Nation & businesses) Availability of federal $ to help disadvantaged students Again population will increase need for healthcare workers National political climate favors community colleges (state does not) Development of 289 & Dallas North Tollway Promotion of North Texas Regional Airport Bonham Center Increase in new hotels being built in area Driving Forces Identified from data by the External Team
