2004 SOCIETY AWARDS

The 2004 Society Awards held in New Orleans recognized pioneers in robotics and automation.   2. PIONEER IN ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION AWARD • Evaluation Committee: Georges Giralt (Chair), George Bekey, Shigeo Hirose, John Hollerbach, Bruno Siciliano, Kazuo Tanie. • Prize Items: Certificate, Plaque, and $1000 (shared).

  3. Co-Recipients • Antal K. Bejczy Citation: For seminal technical contributions to robotics and teleoperation, and pioneering research in space robotics and Human-Robot interfaces. • Toshio Fukuda Citation: For pioneer contributions to the development of cellular/distributed robotics systems and micro/nano robotic systems.

  4. RAS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD • Evaluation Committee: Steve Hsia (Chair), Toshio Fukuda, George Lee, Peter Luh. • Prize Items: Certificate, Plaque, and $1000.

  5. Recipients • George Bekey Citation: For his leadership in Robotics and automation since the inception of the organization. • David E. Orin Citation: For his contributions to the RAS Professional activities and his leadership in financial activities. • Yuan F. Zheng Citiation: For his contributions to the RAS technical activities and his leadership in conference services.

  6. EARLEY INDUSTRY CAREER AWARD IN ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION • Evaluation Committee: Ken Goldberg (Chair), Makoto Kaneko, Lydia Kavraki, Kevin Lynch, Brad Nelson. • Prize Items: Certificate, Plaque, and $1000.

  7. Recipient • Paolo Pirjanian Citation: For contributions to mobile robots and commercially practical robots and vision systems.

  8. EARLY ACADEMIC CAREER AWARD IN ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION • Evaluation Committee: Brad Nelson (Chair), Kevin Lynch, Makoto Kaneko (recused: Ken Godberg, Lydia Kavraki). • Prize Items: Certificate, plaque, and $500 (shared).  

  9. Co-Recipients • Karl Bohringer Citation: For contributions to physical geometric algorithms and MEMS, with applications to self-assembly and part manipulation. • Katsu Yamane Citation: For development of algorithms and software for the dynamics of kinematic chains, with applications to humanoid robotics and computer graphics.

  10. CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD • Evaluation Committee: Makoto Kaneko (Chair), Ken Goldberg, Kazuhiro Kosuge, Paolo Fiorini. • Prize Items: Certificate and $1000.

  11. Recipient • CSS/R&A Chapter Queensland Citation: Qualified Services.

Committee Status Report • Nomination Deadline was March 15, 2004. • Evaluation Committee reports back to IEEE by June 15, 2004 • Due to first time use of electronic nomination submission and unexpected surge in number of nominations, IEEE was unable to provide evaluation documents to S/C Evaluation Chairs by April 15 as usual. They promised to send out the documents in first week of May. So our committee will do evaluation by mail. Candidates nominated are unknown.

IEEE Technical Field Award inRobotics and Automation • IEEE TFA in R&A approved by IEEE BoD in June 2002, first award presentation be in 2004 • Administration: IEEE TFA Committee on R&A, IEEE TFA Council, IEEE Awards Board • Award Description: To an individual for outstanding contributions to robotics and automation • Prize Items: Bronze medal, certificate, $10,000.

TFA Selection Committee Actions for 2005 Award • Teleconference meeting was held on October 8, 2003 for developing potential 2005 award nominees (about 20 names were proposed). • Nominations were actively sought. Nomination deadline was January 30, 2004. • Four candidates were nominated. • Teleconference meeting was held on March 8, 2004, one recipient and an alternate were selected. • IEEE Awards Board will approve on April 29, and BoD will approve on June 20, 2004.

  22. 2005-06 Selection Committee • The 2003-04 Selection Committee has retired as of March 8, 2004. • A new Selection Committee for 2005-06 will be chaired by Tony Bejczy
