  3. Mongol Takeover (1271-1368) • Mongol leader Genghis Khan (Tiemuzhen) overthrew the native Chinese rulers in power of Xixia and the Jin Dynasty. • His grandson, Kublai Khan, established the Yuan Dynasty in 1271 with what is now Beijing (Yuandadu) as the capital.

  4. Achievements • Unified the whole territory • First empire with widely used paper money • Science and technology • Astronomy, mathematics, water conservation, and agriculture • Foreign trade • Literature and theater set standard

  5. Notable Events • 1281—Second attempt to attack Japan • 1288—Attacked Turkey and Asia Myna • 1292—Conquered Java and Vietnam • 1355—Zhu Yuan Zhang rebelled against Yuan Dynasty • 1366—Conquered Jin Ling
