My Personal Interest in Web 2.0 • RSS workshop & help with 3 blogs at KSL • ALA Library 2.0 participant • ALA LAMA Web Coordinator • Blogs, RSS, Wiki, Communities • Teach workshop for KSU SLIS • Regular IM user • Non-IT person that likes to “play”
Today we will… • Use AJAX to create a mashup, which we will syndicate by RSS, after we create the XML file, and write up the documentation in a wiki • And I will demonstrate all of this in 3-D from within Second Life April Fools Day
It Can Be Simple • Transformations in training • Web 2.0 for the trainer • Web 2.0 for training • What has been done already
Warnings, the “but…” moment • Not every tool and technique works for every need and/or user • I do not have time… • I do not have money… • The old way works… • Try to leave today with one potential new tool for personal or professional usage
Training Desires: Participant • Interesting & fun • Variety • Adjustable to me (pace, level, etc.) • Solo or group participation • Interactive • Easy to get help • Archived, on-going
Training Desires: Trainer • Easy to maintain • Adjustable over time • Collaborative • Ability to gain feedback for improvement or assessment • Easy to incorporate into existing systems, procedures, & policies
Why Web 2.0? Key concepts or focus points: • Collaboration & sharing • Participant’s ownership in activities • Creation & creativity • Web-based rather than software based • Data/information • Social • Connections/relationships • Trust (2-way)
Web 2.0 Concepts • Enrichment • Can be personalized • Participation • Decentralized • User “tagged” or defined • Experiences • Remixable • Behavior rather than the actual tools • Beyond static web pages
Coined by O'Reilly Media (2004) http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web-20.html#mememap
“The Example” http://plcmclearning.blogspot.com/ • Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County • Helene Blowers
Learning 2.0 • 23 Things over couple of months • Incentives for staff • Creative Commons License • Self-paced or guided • Exploration of web 2.0 basics • The model for bringing everything under one umbrella
Learning 2.0 • Blogging • Photos • RSS • Tagging • Wikis • Online applications • Podcasts • Many other tools
Blogger • Template driven • Privacy can be set to “only people I choose” or “only blog authors” • Multiple authors • Can be deleted or “hidden” from eyes • Various levels of commenting available
RSS Benefits • Updates without visiting site • Quick • Summaries • Less in email box • Many types of media can be included • Easy to share (web address or OPML)
RSS in Databases & Publisher Websites • Create a RSS alert directly from a result lists, a search history, or a publication’s table of contents.
Wiki – Features Collaborative writing environment in the form of a web page. • Article • Editing mode • Discussion/Talk • History/Archive • Search • Index/Categories
Wiki: Popular Uses • FAQs • History of • Subject guides • Community portal • Training manuals and documentation • Group collaboration • Traditional website alternative
Visual • Screencasts • Movies • Flash
