I、 What is scanning? Scanning is very fast reading. When you scan, you look for information as quickly as you can, and you look carefully for key words that can show you where important details are.
II、What is scanning good for students? Scanning can help many students improve their reading. Usually, they read every word in a passage, so they read very slowly. When students scan, they don’t read every word. They have to skip many words. Practice with scanning helps them learn how to skip over words and find out key words. Thus, they can learn to read faster and understand better.
III、You can scan: ◎a table of contents in a magazine or a book ◎ an index in a textbook ◎ a timetable ◎ the ads in a newspaper ◎ a list of movies in the newspaper ◎ a telephone book ◎ the pages of a dictionary
IV、You usually don't scan: ◎a mystery story ◎ a textbook for an important course ◎ important papers from a lawyer ◎a map for finding your way home ◎a question on a test ◎a poem
V、 Scanning exercises: A. Scanning a table of contents in a textbook A table of contents is always at the front of a textbook. It tells you what you can find in each lesson.
First, let students go through the top of the table quickly. Let them know how many different subjects of columns there are. Then let them do the exercise 1 below. Exercise 1 Read each question. Circle the key words first, and then scan the table of contents to find the answers. Work fast! 1. What’s the title of lesson one? 2. What’s the topic of lesson two? 3. What’s the grammar focus of lesson three? 4. What’s the writing corner of lesson four? 5. What page is lesson five on?
Write two more questions about this table of contents. 1. 2. Ask other students to scan the table of contents for the answers to your questions.

B. Scanning an index in an encyclopedia. An index is usually at the back of a book or an encyclopedia. It lists all the topics in the book in alphabetical order. You can use an index to find information quickly.

C.Scanning notices on the bulletin board. People can find a lot of information on the bulletin board in their community center. So do students at school.
Exercise 3 Read each question. Circle the key words first and then scan the notices to find the answers. Work fast! 1. How many different kinds of notices are there on the bulletin board? 2. How much does it cost if you buy everything? 3. If you buy everything, how much can you save? 4. What do we need to do to keep our campus clean?

D. Scanning an article in a magazine Enjoy life at Macquarie University At 1:00 p.m. he has lunch with his friends. After lunch he studies in the library. He has another class at 4:00 p.m. and then goes shopping downtown. He goes home around 6:30 p.m. In the evenings he doesn’t study. He reads, watches basketball or goes out with his friends. He goes to bed at 1:00 a.m. Michael thinks student life is fun! Michael is a law student at Macquarie University. He lives in Sydney, in an apartment with two other students. Michael’s day starts at 7:30 a.m. He gets up and takes a shower. He doesn’t have a car, so at 8:15 a.m. he catches a bus to college. He has coffee and toast in a coffee shop on campus. He starts class at 10:00 a.m. The classes are difficult but interesting.
Exercise 4 Circle the key words first in each question. Then scan the magazine article to find the answers to these questions. Work fast! 1. What’s the name of the University? 2. Who is the international student? 3. What does Michael study at Macquarie university? 4. Where does Michael live? 5. After Michael gets up, What does he do?

E. Scanning a passage in a textbook Country music is very old. It came from the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Great Britain. Country music is a mixture of music from all of these places. In the American West, cowboys had to take care of the cattle. They had to watch them all day and all night because the cattle were nervous and sometimes ran away. A cowboy's life was lonely and dangerous. When he was alone in the desert with the cattle, he drank strong coffee with lots of caffeine to stay awake at night. He also sang to the cattle to calm them. He sang about the stars and the moon, about his family and his friends. The cattle listened to the cowboy and went to sleep. They did not run away if he sang beautiful, peaceful music.
The cowboys played music either on guitars or on harmonicas. Later, they used violins and other instruments. In the American South, many people came from Ireland, Scotland, and England. Other people came from French Canada. They enjoyed their own kind of music. They used guitars, violins, and harmonicas, too. However, they also added instruments from their homes, like bottles, cans, and spoons. Country music describes life. It talks about love, jobs, home, and money. It also talks about friends and enemies, trucks and highways, farms and crops. People in many parts of the world like country music because everyone knows something about these things.
