The 1st Amendment Freedom of Petition Freedom of Religion Freedom of Assembly
The 2nd Amendment The right to bear arms and maintain militia Not all arms!
The 3rd Amendment • Restricts quartering of troops • Not valid during emergencies!
Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures The 4th Amendment The need for probable cause, search warrants, and arrest warrants
The 5th Amendment • Assures the right not to be deprived of “life, liberty, or property, without due process of law” • Includes protection against double jeopardy… • Self incrimination… • Seizure of property w/o compensation
The 6th Amendment • Guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury
The 7th Amendment Trial by jury, though small claims is a judge
The Eighth Amendment • Protects against excessive bail, • Cruel and unusual punishment ??????????? ??????? ??
Amendment 9 • People’s rights are not restricted to only those in the Constitution! Amendment 10 Restates federalism: powers not listed for the federal governerment belong the states and people!
