LONDONDERRY SCHOOL DISTRICT, S.A.U. #12 FY2015 BUDGET WHAT DOES S.A.U. # 12 MEAN? A School Administrative Unit refers to the people and area serviced by a particular public school system/district. Each S.A.U. has its own governing school board. Each S.A.U. in New Hampshire is given an number by the state for identification and Londonderry’s S.A.U. number is 12. WHAT DOES FY MEAN? FY stands for fiscal year or the calendar year for the budget.
A LOOK AT THE LARGEST EXPENDITURE FOR THE DISTRICT - SALARIES Base Salary= A base salary is the money paid for a contracted amount of service. LSD teachers are contracted to work 187 days and are thus paid a salary for all the “regular” duties that go with being a teacher over that contracted period of time. step* X education level/degree** = base salary * step = usually number of years experience teaching ** educational degree = bachelors: undergraduate study masters: graduate study doctorate: post- graduate degree How long have most teachers in LSD been teaching? THE LONDONDERRY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (LEA) COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT Teacher salaries, benefits, job requirements, evaluations, etc are negotiated between the LEA (teachers’ union) and the Londonderry School Board. Once the LEA and the board have an agreement, the fiscal issues (salary raises, benefits, etc) are put before the district voters for approval or rejection.

GIVEN THE FOLLOWING THREE CHOICES OF PEOPLE TO HIRE AS A TEACHER FOR YOUR SCHOOL, WHO WOULD YOU HIRE? WHY? CANDIDATE #1 – Twenty-two year old; just graduated from UNH with a master’s in education and a 3.2 GPA; at UNH involved with student newspaper as a reporter; no teaching experience other than student-teaching; willing to be an advisor or coach, but has no previous experience CANDIDATE #2 – Thirty-four year old; graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s and a 2.7 GPA; five years experience; had previously taught at Laconia High School; has never been involved in any extra-curricular activities; family issues required this candidate move into this area of state CANDIDATE #3 – Fifty-two years old; graduated from URI; has a bachelor’s degree plus 30, a 3.7 GPA and a 4.0 in all classes of his/her major; has taught thirty years in public schools and at the same time coached every season; while at previous teaching assignments, helped create three new classes and involved in community service
Merit Pay= Merit pay is pay based on meeting performance standards.Usually the criteria are negotiated between the employer and employees. For example, merit pay for teachers may be dependent on student test scores. Stipend = A stipend is money paid for additional contracted duties and responsibilities. For example, a stipend may be paid to coaches and advisors. The amount of the stipend given is usually dependent on contracted time for “regular” duties and determined by a rigid formula. Pay and job responsibilities of other personnel, such as support staff, custodians, nurses, etc are also negotiated by representative unions in the same way. Their salary raises also must be approved by the school district voters. School district administrators must negotiate their own individual “package” with the superintendent. The superintendent negotiates his own individual “package” with the school board.
SO HOW MUCH DO SALARIES AND BENEFITS COST LSD? AND WHAT ABOUT OTHER COSTS? • For the answers to those and other questions, we will turn to the Londonderry School District Annual Report. The Annual Report provides an enormous amount of information about the budget. It also gives us: • an annual review of the district and each school • information about what happened at last year’s annual school district meetings • the warrant for this year’s annual school district meeting • how much money each employee in the district was paid the previous year • enrollment numbers • information on out-placed students • AND A WHOLE LOT MORE!!!
