If you live in the giver community, you don’t have to worry about lack of food. Food is brought straight to your door every single day! “’And the strongest memory that came was hunger. It came from many generations back. Centuries back. The population had gotten so big that hunger was everywhere. Excruiating hunger and starvation. It was followed by warfare.’…It was a concept Jonas did not know… Unconsciously he rubbed his own abdomen, recalling the pain of its unfulfilled needs.” (pg. 111-112) Jonas had just now learned about hunger and starvation from memories that the Giver gave him of the real world.. Before, he didn’t even know what the word meant! You don’t have to worry about that. • Some officials estimate at least 12 people a day die from starvation. Other reports have put the estimate at more then 100 deaths a day!! You don’t have to worry about that. Despite aid effort, Sudan famine squeezing life from dozens daily AJIEP, Southern Sudan (CNN) -- This is the destination for thousands of starving Sudanese who journey from areas throughout famine-stricken Bahr al-Ghazal in search of food. Ajiep is a purgatory -- a campground for more than 7,000 malnourished people, naked or clothed in rags, who await food, or certain death. You don’t have to worry about that. It is NOT a pretty sight. http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9807/31/sudan.famine/
Natural Disaster Why would you want to live in a community where there are devastating hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires? Natural disasters often lead to the deaths and injuries of many people. “Hurricane Katrina was the eleventh named tropical storm, fourth hurricane, third major hurricane, and first Category 5 hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the third most powerful storm of the season, behind Hurricane Wilma and Hurricane Rita, and the sixth-strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It first made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane just north of Miami, Florida on August 25, 2005, then again on August 29 along the Central Gulf Coast near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana as a Category 4 storm. Its storm surge soon breached the levee system that protected New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Most of the city was subsequently flooded mainly by water from the lake. Heavy damage was also inflicted onto the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, causing Katrina to become the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States. The official death toll now stands at 1,325, the third highest in US history (behind the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928). 6,644 others remain unaccounted for, with 1,300 of them "feared dead" [1]. The damage is estimated to be from $200 to $300 billion [2], at least double from previously most expensive Hurricane Andrew making Katrina the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history. Over a million people were displaced a humanitarian crisis on a scale unseen in the U.S. since the Great Depression.” From the encyclopedia Wikipedia
Sicknesses Everyone knows how it feels to be sick. But, in this community, illnesses are not present. Rea Bkajey of CNN reported: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, taking 150,000 lives each year. Cancer experts say 90 percent of lung cancers are attributable to cigarette smoking. The increase in female lung cancer mortality, they add, is evidence of a tobacco use trend that trails 25 years behind that of men. From cnn.com
