Project Lead The Way Academy Mr. Cook Mr. Kress
Courses Required for Academy • Introduction to Engineering Design- 1credit (We are using IED to screen the students before they apply for the academy after their 9thgrade year. They must apply to be in the Academy.) • Principles of Engineering- 1credit • Digital Electronics- 1credit • Civil and Architectural Engineering- 1cr. • Engineering Design and Development- 1 credit. • BEEP portfolio-1/2 credit.
What we have accomplished. • Currently have 15 sophomores enrolled in the PLTW academy. (We are looking to have groups of 10-20 in each academy.) • We are teaching 3 of the 6 classes required Introduction to Engineering Design- Mr. Kress currently has 68 freshman which are going to apply to be in our 2nd year PLTW academy. Principles Of Engineering- Mr. Kress is currently teaching this class to our 1st PLTW group which is sophomores and we also allowed any juniors and seniors interested.
What we have accomplished. (continued) • Digital Electronics- Mr. Cook is currently teaching this class to our 1st PLTW group which is sophomores and we also allowed any juniors and seniors interested. • Civil and Architectural Engineering- Mr. Cook will be going to RIT this summer to get trained to implement our fourth course which the students will be taking their junior or senior year.
What we have accomplished. (continued) • Engineering Design and Development- Our final class will be taught at the BOCES center. Mr. Kress and I would like to look into teaching the final class here at Pioneer because a lot of our students are complaining about not having the time to go to BOCES because of their rigorous schedules. (AP courses and other electives) • Beep portfolio- Mr. Kress or Mr. Cook need to get certified to teach the Beep portfolio class.
What we have accomplished. (continued) • We have finished the forms we need in order start having students apply to the academy. The forms include: • Student application • Teacher recommendation form. • Applicants interview appointment sheet • Interview procedures and possible questions. • Applicant interview rating sheet. • Student selection evaluation sheet. • Interviews will be conducted by the Technology teachers and Guidance counselors
Marketing the PLTW Academy • This is the second year we have sent a letter home to the eighth grade parents informing them that there son or daughter is going to be enrolling in new electives next year. We included brochures of the PLTW academy along with a brochure of our regular technology classes. • We also went over to the middle school to give presentations to the eighth graders and recruit them by explaining our classes and showing them some of the projects from our classes.
Marketing the PLTW Academy continued • Mr. Skip Tillinghast has written an article promoting PLTW in the school newsletter. • Mrs. Wrotniak has written an article promoting PLTW in the PFA newsletter.
Things we need to accomplish • Work on our RIT certification process. • Establish an Advisory board with local businesses, engineers, board members, teachers, etc…….. (Possibly board members might have some contacts that would help us with this process.) Please see Mr. Cook, Mr. Kress, or Mr. Schultz with any information.
Things we need to accomplish (continued • We need to establish the middle school Gateway to Technology program to help students understand what engineering is at a younger age. We feel that it would really help the high school program, as well as reinforce the importance of math and science in the real world.
Things we need to accomplish (continued) • Find a way to implement the application process without intimidating the students who lack initiative. • Find a way to get teachers, guidance counselors, and staff members to help promote the PLTW academy. • Talk with administration and guidance about allowing POE to be a 4th year science credit and DE to be a 4th year math credit.
Any Questions? Mr. Kress and I would like to Thank you for your time and commitment to our PLTW academy.
