Walt Disney Creator of Mickey Mouse Book by: Michael D. Cole By: Sam Barger
Early stages in Walt Disney's life Disney's father, Elias Disney moved around a lot he never liked to stay in one place for a long time. Disney also had a large family, 3 brothers and 1 sister Walt Disney was named after the family’s preacher, Walter Parr. When Walter Parr and Elias Disney’s wives were both pregnant they each agreed to name the others baby (if it was a boy) after the father of the other. Walt was born in Chicago, Illinois but doesn’t remember his first months there
the beginning of his career • In 1919 Disney moved to Kansas City where his brother Roy(the brother he was closest to) lived. • He found a job as a newspaper artist at Pesmen-Rubin with another artist, Ub Iwerks. Later they were both let go. • Since they were out of work they discussed going into business for themselves thus forming Iwerks-Disney commercial artists.
Continuing the career • In 1920 Disney got a job for the Kansas city film ad company. Later since the need for cartoonists were higher Disney recommended Ub Iwerks and so Disney And Iwerks were together again • Disney started making and selling cartoons to the local theater calling them Newman laugh-O-Grams • In 1921 Roy(Disney’s brother) was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent away for treatment. Disney got some cartoonists to work for him for no pay.
Disney's later years • At age 21 Disney wrote to a film distributor, Margaret Winkler, who was interested in a short Alice in wonderland cartoon that Disney had started earlier, so he sent Winkler a sample of the unfinished cartoon. • Winkler liked the cartoon and made a contract with Disney, which was $1,500 for each finished cartoon • Disney brought his brother Roy into the job Thus beginning the Disney Brothers Studio.
Disney brothers studio • Disney hired 2 women to ink and add color to the cartoon slides. The quality of the cartoons worsened, because the company was running low on money. • Winkler said that that the people complained that the cartoons lacked something. Disney knew just what it was, so once again he brought in Ub Iwerks • Walt got married to Lillian Bonds, an inker at his studio. • Distributions of Alice cartoons turned over to Winkler's husband Charlie Mintz
The new rabbit • A demand for cartoons about a rabbit arose and Disney started creating “Oswald the lucky rabbit". • In 1927 the studio’s name was changed to Walt Disney studios. • Mintz had the contract’s price cut for the Oswald series and if Disney didn’t agree to the new terms Mintz would make the cartoons himself and take Disney's employees
The talking mouse • After accepting Mintz's the terms Disney went back to California with an idea for a new Character, his own character forming in his head. Roy, Iwerks and Disney worked on the new character in total secrecy. • He previewed the1st Mickey mouse cartoon in a local theater and the audience liked it. • Sound was beginning to take root in the world’s movies and Disney wanted it. Disney invested 500$ for the use of a sound system and put together a recording session. Disney was offered 1,000$ for a theater in New York to show the 1st animated cartoon with sound. That contract cost Disney $26,000 a year.
Silly Symphonies • Disney knew that he could not keep having the same character, so he started crating Silly Symphonies where each cartoon had a different storyline and different characters. • the first Silly Symphony the Skeleton Dance was a big success but it was very expensive to produce.
Powers plot • Pat powers(the distributor for Disney's sound system) owed Disney's studio $150,000 but when they went to get it Powers denied everything and he got Ub Iwerks to start his own animation studio. • Powers also made it so every producer Disney talked to was afraid to produce Disney's cartoons because Powers would sue them. All except one, Harry Cohn. • Cohn eagerly sighed a contract for the popular Disney cartoons.
Creating a world for 7 dwarfs • In 1931 Disney had a nervous breakdown due to the stress of his career. He and his wife went on a 2 month vacation to calm his nerves. • In 1932 Mickey Mouse won an Oscar and his wife was pregnant their 1st baby • In 1933 Disney began producing Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs Disney and his animators worked for 3 years on this project and to make animation is best Disney crated the multiplane camera. In 1937 the film was produced and it was a big success. He was given a special Oscar for the film which was a full sized one with 7 smaller ones(one for each dwarf).
The strike and the war • In 1938 Disney's mother died from a gas leak. • During world war 2 Disney was asked to make films to identify aircraft for the Navy. • In 1941 Disney's employees went on strike due to hard work and little pay. In that year Disney's father died while Disney was on a business trip also while he was on the trip Roy settled the strike.
Disneyland • After Disney had built a scale model train around his house he began to have ideas for a small amusement park. In 1952 Disney invested his lifesavings and $100,000 of his life insurance to Disneyland. • In 1954 Disney received 4 Oscars(what for was not mentioned). • On July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened and Disneyland got its 1,000,000th customer just 7 weeks later. Later Disney was beginning to feel very old and wanted to produce one more great movie which was Mary Poppins. • In 19 64 Disney was given the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.
The end of a legend • In 1966 Disney was diagnosed with lung cancer and was hospitalized. • At 9:35 A.M. on December 15, 1966 Walter Elias Disney died. Thus ending the life of one of the greatest people in history.
