  8. IAP 2013: TEACH in GERMANY Global Teaching Labs • STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering, math • Three weeks in January • Hosted by teachers, student families • Highly selective – must have significant teaching experience

  24. Why MISTI? • Want to enjoy your summer & relax? • Guilt for not having improved yourself in any way? • MISTI !! cool internships AND fun. • pays for your return ticket, gives a stipend • No time to arrange? MISTI coordinators! Visa, tickets and accommodation in most cases.

  25. Why Germany? • Germany is a beautiful country. I mean it. • It’s a completely different culture. It really will give you a new perspective on life. • People are very friendly

  26. Why learn German? • It’s required • It definitely helps to make friends • Safety – most people will understand English but important signs/announcements • Learning a language is essential in cultural immersion! Helps understand mindset.

  27. How to go if you are a freshman • First off, language requirement. If you have any background in German, make an appointment! • Academic background. inadequate at times. But if you are ready to work hard, they’ll teach you.

  28. What was I doing? • I was working at the Institute of Pathology, University of Bonn Medical School. • Prostate cancer research. Had several cell lines. • Great learning experience. Some things I noticed: • Germans not as expected- not organized and disciplined. Pretty relaxed. • Interns/lab technicians/researches join the same meetings, treated as a part of the team

  29. Would I recommend it? • YES • Build confidence • Gain international experience • Improve language/communication skills • Travel around & experience Europe

  30. Some weird things I did… • Mitfahrgelegenheit. • Talking to a stranger on a bus/train every day – got to meet Maja and her family. • NOT take any pictures in Bonn
