  3. Summary of Plot (Plot Summary) One day after, they all took boats north of the river, and began the last stage of their journey. Bilbo is floating along the river with his barrel, and sees the Lonely Mountain. He listens to rafts men and gathers as much information as he can. Soon after, he arrives at the Long Lake. Once the barrels come in sight, rowboats come out to gather them. The group then heads to the town by the lake, and Thorin tells the chief to take them to their Master. There, the master nourishes them with a feast.

  4. Character Revelation Bilbo Baggins Beginning of Book Chapter 10 Bilbo never even dreamed about adventures. He was content spending his whole day in his cozy little hobbit-hole by himself, which some might say is boring. He is off on an adventure no hobbit has ever even dreamed of. Bilbo freed all of his friends from the captivity of the wood-elves. Bilbo was never one to go out of his way to help people if they are in trouble. Bilbo is going down waterfalls and rivers in a barrel, showing that he is not afraid of a little un-ordinary experience. Bilbo had never done anything crazy, or “fun”.

  6. Simile A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things, usually by employing the words "like" or "as".* “He had a famished and savage look like a dog that has been chained and forgotten in a kennel for a week.” (Tolkien 193) *Retrieved from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simile on April 23rd, 2012.

  7. Anthropomorphism (Personification) • Anthropomorphism is any attribution of human characteristics (or characteristics assumed to belong only to humans) to animals, non-living things, phenomena, material states, objects or abstract concepts.* • “After a while the river rounded a steep shoulder of land that came down upon the left.
