Infants • Might react to changes in parent’s mood and/or energy level • Might loose appetite • Important Bonds may be broken
Pre-School Children • Usually believe that they have caused the divorce. • May fear being left alone or abandon. • May feel they are being punished when moved between houses.
School Age Children • Old enough to understand that they are in pain but not old enough to control the pain. • May experience grief, embarrassment, resentment, divided loyalty, and/or anger. • Will hope parents will get back together. • May feel rejected by the parent that leaves.
Adolescents • May experience anger, fear, loneliness, depression or guilt. • May feel pushed into adulthood if they are responsible for more chores or caring for siblings. • Some teens will try to take control over the family, others feel a loss of parental support. • May doubt their own ability to get married or stay married.
