  8. South Dakota’s State sport is the Rodeo. Rodeo traces it’s roots to the old west when cowboys gathered after a cattle roundup and celebrated with entertaining competitions to showing off their horsemanship and roping skills. It’s fast- paced action When the cowboys get in the arena! They compete in categories such as calf roping,bull riding,steer wrestling and saddle bronc riding. Rodeo

  9. The Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasant is the state bird. It was introduced to South Dakota in 1898 and is easily recognized by it’s colorful imagery. It is also known for it’s delicious meat. Since it is primarily a Midwestern bird, pheasant is considered a delicacy in many other states.

  10. The pasque is the state flower. It is also called the May Day flower. It grows wild throughout the state, and its blooming is one of the first signs of spring in South Dakota. A member of the buttercup family, the pasqueis a small, lavender flower.

  11. The state animal is the coyote, a natural predator of small game and rodents. The adaptable coyote hunts the open prairies and fields over the entire state, but occurs in greatest numbers along the Missouri River, its tributaries and in the Black Hills.

  12. The Black Hills spruce, a member of the evergreen family, is the state tree. The pyramid-shaped tree has short, blue-green needles and slender comes.

  15. Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in a log cabin described in Little House in the Big Woods. As her classic Little House books tells us, she and her family traveled by covered- wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. There Laura wrote the classic Little House books and lived until she was ninety years old From the readers point of view however, she lives forever as the little pioneer girl in the classic Little House books.

  16. Becky Hammon Becky Hammon is a basketball player for the New York Liberty. She is their guard. She is 5 feet 6 inches. She was born on March 11, 1977. Becky has an older brother, Matt and an older sister, Gina. She has a golden retrieve named Trey and two rabbits named Grant and Griffey. She enjoys hunting, fishing, water sports, playing softball and recreational football, and going dancing, she also enjoys singing ,and playing drums. She supports the group smart. This program helps elementary students become involved in the community. She majored in exercise and sports and science at Colorado University. She graduated in 1999.

Billy Mills In 1964 Billy Mills stunned spectators in one of the worst upsets in Olympic history, when, is virtually unknown, he outran the competition in the last 100 meters of the 10,000- meter race and took home the gold metal . He was born in June 30, 1938 in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He was not only the first of America to win that event but during that time he made history with all his results he received serves as the national spokesperson for the aid organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth . The movie Running Brave is based on his life story.

  18. Norm Van Brocklin One of the greatest opening day performances came in 1951 when Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin of Los Angeles Rams threw as a quarterback for a record 554 yards. The mark still stands as the greatest single passing effort in National Football League history.Van Brocklin received the start that day when veteran Bob Waterfield, also a member of the Hall, was injured. The two quarterbacks were entrenched in a cautious and crazy battle for the starting role. The “Dutchman,” as Norman was nicknamed, made the highest of his chances. He had more than 27 -41 perfect passes and tossed 5 touchdowns which went to fellow Hall of farmer Elroy “Crazy legs” Hirsch-en route to a easy 54-14 win, beating the New York Yanks.

  29. Attractions • The Badlands takes you back in time. The 1880 Town is an authentic 1880 to 1920 era town from buildings to their contents. The displays and buildings range from Indian relics from from the 1870’s to the fourteen- sided barn built in 1919. Town Open daily May thru October.

  30. The triceratops, a horned dinosaur of the late Cretaceous period ( approximately 68 million years ago), is the state fossil. It was a vegetarian- eating dinosaur and used its horns for defense. Discovered in Harding Country in 1927, the skeleton is now on display in the museum of Geology in Rapid City.

  31. The South Dakota flag features the state seal surrounded by a golden blazing sun in a field of sky blue. Letters reading “South Dakota, The Mount Rushmore State”– the official state nickname – are arranged in a circle around the sun. The official pledge to the state flag is: “ I pledge loyaltyand support to the flag and state of South Dakota, land of sunshine, land of infinite of variety.” The pledge to the flag and to the state may not preempt, replace or be recited before the pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United states.   32. The state seal serves as a symbol of life in South Dakota. It depicts the state’s diversity of commerce and resources: farming, ranching, industries, lumbering, manufacturing and mining. It bears the motto: “ Under God the People Rule.” The seal was adopted in 1885, four before the state was admitted to the Union.
