Resume Objective Statement An effective objective statement should establish a career statement that is realistic, one that: Focuses on what you want to do for the employer, not what you want the employer to do for you Describes the skills you want to use on the job, the job function you seek, and/or the environment/industry in which you want to work States the work you want to do, while all other information in the resume is supportive data for why you should be interviewed for that position Try to create something new, avoid frequently used phrases like: Growing, dynamic company, progressive company Opportunity for advancement Challenging position, position dealing with people

Choosing a Resume Format No “best” format – select a resume format that will best market you and will appeal to the needs of the potential employer Imagine what employers you are targeting would look for in a new hire and highlight your corresponding experience and skills Every job seeker is unique and presentation of the resume must reflect that individual – tailor your resume for the company and the specific position Typical sections found on resumes regardless of format: Career Objective Education Honors Personal Qualifications Work Experience Activities Professional Summary Special Skills References*

Chronological Format Information is organized in reverse chronological order with the most recent employment experience first Advantages: Most common resume format Many employers are more comfortable with the chronological format Highlights a steady employment record Disadvantages: This format clearly exposes employment gaps Can emphasize work areas you prefer to minimize
