Daniel in the Lions’ Den • 6:1-5 (Darius, Daniel, and the Administration) • Darius was an organizer and a survivor (like most men, he could be manipulated) • Daniel was a righteous servant to God and man (God was always first with Daniel’s loyalty) • The others were envious of Daniel • The error of envy (destruction of others and self) • The problem from pride (manipulated by blindness) • The dedication of Daniel
The Error of Envy • Enticed by others in higher places: Dan. 6:3 • Jesus’ popularity (Matt. 27:18) • Joseph’s preferential treatment (Acts 7:9) • Need to take over by any means: Dan. 6:4-5 • Prov 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. • Phil 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
The Error of Envy • Manipulation of others: • Dan. 6:6-9 The law is passed by Darius • Dan. 6:10-13 The report against Daniel • Dan. 6:14-15 The urge to punish the crime • Destruction of the envious: Dan. 6:24 • Job 5:2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. (Eliphaz) • Prov 27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
The Problem from Pride • Darius manipulated by the united effort of the administration (Dan. 6:6-9) • The law suggested he was supreme (30 days) • Irrevocable law showed he was not: 8, 12, 15 • Nebuchadnezzar: 4:29-32 • Belshazzar: 5:20-22 • The law was in place, the trap was sprung, and Darius was sorry for the results
The Problem from Pride • Different reaction to the violation of his law • Dan. 3:19-20 King was furious • Prov 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. • He tried to find a loop hole: Dan. 6:14 • He fasted and did not sleep: 18 • He arose early and cried: 19-20 • He was glad when Daniel was well: 23
The Dedication of Daniel • No fault found in Daniel (6:4) • Promotions can lead to self importance, blind ambition, brutality against others... • Col. 4:1, 1 Pet. 5:3-4 • Create conflict (Dan. 6:5) • Two sources of authority: Matt. 21:25 • Not always in conflict with one another • When they are? Serve God: Acts 4:19, 5:29
