  2. History The company was founded in 1964, originally called Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight. The first retail store opened in 1966 in Santa Monica, California. It officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978 after “Nike”, the Greek goddess of victory.
