Nike Inc. History • Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight become business partners by forming Blue Ribbon Sports, to create quality athletic footwear. • In 1965, Jeff Johnson becomes BRS first employee. • Johnson creates their first marketing campaign. • In 1971, Johnson comes up with the name, Nike, and the swoosh is developed shortly thereafter. • In 1980, Nike becomes a publically traded company.

History Cont. • The early 1980’s brought about a terrible decline in sales. • Nike recovered in 1985, with the introduction of a new shoe for the NBA, for rookie, Michael Jordan. • 1987- 1988 brought prosperity to Nike, due to new ad campaigns, especially the “Just Do It” campaigns. • In 1989 Nike regained their number one status in the shoe industry.

History Cont. • The 90’s brought forth a new focus for Nike, golf and soccer. • In 1996, Nike hired Tiger Woods as its spokesman for an unprecedented $5 million dollars. • Nike Shox debuted in 2000 to great success. • At present, Nike is one of the world’s most innovative companies who continually strives to create new and functional products to better serve the needs of their customers.
Strengths • How the strengths have impacted the popularity of Nike. • How Nike’s marketing and use of athletes helps with brand recognition • How Nike are receptive to their customer needs • How they use their brand power to expand their product lines. For example their golf balls, golf bags, shirts, hats, etc.
Weaknesses • Labeled as the “very expensive” brand • Some people cannot afford Nike • Largely dependent on footwear products • Other products are not as strong • Poor conditions in the workplace • Constant negative criticism by anti-globalization group • Sensitive about pricing products
Opportunities • Sell mostly athletic shoes and clothing • Can expand their market • Technology • Running/Workout equipment • Accessories • Global company • Can sell to more people • Make products that cater to different regions • Nike’s development of shoes for Native Americans
Opportunities- Native Impact • In the 2000’s Nike developed specialized footwear for Native American’s called N7’s. • Native American’s have unique feet features which are not normally considered in shoe development. • Nike N7’s are designed wider and thicker to accommodate. • Tribal communities receive proceeds from the N7 product line to support Native athletes
Opportunities- Native Impact Continued • Nike is trying to help battle conditions caused by inactivity such as obesity and diabetes which are quite common in Tribal communities
Threats • Athletic Industry is large • Many competitors • Dependent on economy • Low economy means low sales • International company • 700 stores • 45 countries • Different currencies can lead to profit loss
