How the Great War Begins 6 • June 28, 1914 - Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the Archduchess Sophia make an official visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia • Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist shoots them both with a pistol in protest over Austria’s annexation of Bosnia
