  3. Holden’s Childhood • Whines and complains a lot • Hypocritical • Sexually innocent • Says he’ll do something and never follows through • Doesn’t care about school • Doesn’t think about his future • Spends money recklessly • Relates to children better • Lies a lot

  4. Holden’s Adulthood • Cares about Phoebe • Donates money to the nuns • Sexually curious • Drinks and smokes • Understands the phoniness in the world • Paid for a prostitute • Thinks he can be on his own

  5. Red hunting hat • Symbol for childhood • Red like Allie’s hair • Doesn’t wear it when he wants to be more mature • Comforts him • Tries to give it to Phoebe • Phoebe gives it back and says it’s ok to keep it longer

Holden’s Loss of innocence • He calls a prostitute to his room • Feels alone in the world • - believes he can make it alone. • Cursing on the walls • - upsets him. • - believes they’re not ready for that. • Aware of the bad things in life • - Allie’s death • - The phonies • Gets beaten up by Maurice • - There are consequences for actions. • - There isn’t always someone there to save you. • Smokes and drinks recklessly.

  8. MY view on childhood to adulthood • More responsibilities • Handles situations maturely and thinks things through • Thinks about their future • Driving • Making mistakes and accepting the consequences • Spending money carefully
