What do you think? We’ve got some questions of our own.
Kim’s Story A Classroom, A Crew, and T-TESS
It all started with a conversation with Matt…... • Looking for Technology for students to show me their understanding of reading skills. • We were working on Theme in class. I wanted a creative outlet for students to show understanding instead of question and answer format. • Matt shared Powtoons - my wheels started spinning!
Needed help exploring this program - who better than students?! • That’s how our TECH Crew began - 10 students and a couple hours after school.
As a Tech Crew, we came up with a plan… We quickly learned there were too many options within the program and needed to simplify for class. Came up with a plan to brainstorm idea of lesson, then explore technology side. Taught how to use program, starting with templates.

Students were Recognized • Once the students shared their finished products, the Tech Crew was asked to teach the staff our program. • This led to branching out and teaching students within other grade levels. The highest honor was being recognized at the school board meeting for helping improve our teaching community.

Tech Coach’s POV Teachers, Students, and Campuses
Chip Away Obstacles • Build relationships • Kim – Chats in the lounge • Dana – GRG#17 project • Elizabeth – Doctorate work • Work the politics • Invite admins to see what’s happening. • Invite detractors. • Kidnap teachers and take them to see.
Look for Opportunities and Go BIG • Go for the “Ask” • Snap and Read/CoWriter (3rd-5th grades) • Campus trainings • Faculty meetings • Invite district admin • District Trainings • Summer PD • August department trainings • Find specialty niches where students can help.
Some Will. Some Won’t. So What. • After August District Training, I was contacted. • Different campuses • Drafted students • We had limited success. • Lessons learned • Need an interview process • Students need to buy in • Can become just another club
Other Lessons Learned • Don’t let your fear limit the kids. • Adults pay better attention when kids lead. • Don’t have “scripts” prepared for students. (Example) • This is about the kids. • Practice, Practice, Practice • Build their confidence. • Build their skills.
Ways to Get Tech Crews Started. Exploit Niches Look for ways you can get student tech crews to facilitate buy-in for purchases and projects from different departments. Anchor Activities Allow student tech crew members to explore tools as anchor or extension activity. Give them a purpose. (Figure out how to do x, y, and z with this tool.) Ready-Made Experts Ask students if they video edit, picture edit, or sound edit. You may be surprised. Train students to seek help from each other – not just from you.
