  1. Experiment • Objectives • Test beam damage potential in different materials 108 plates 30 cm 6 cm 6 cm • Four intensities [SPS-beam type @ 450 GeV]: • A=1.3x1012, B=2.6x1012, C=5.3x1012, D=7.9x1012 Verena Kain (2005) A B D C

  2. Experiment • Verify simulations (FLUKA-BIG-2[EOS]) Temp [C] r [cm] z [cm] Temp(t). 9us simulation. 7.2us SPS-beam pulse. • Energy deposition is calculated by FLUKA for the initial state and then extrapolated to new density distributions. • The peak temperature in the beam-heated region is in the order of 10eV (100.000K) and the pressure is about 15GPa. • A density depletion channel appears in the beam-heated region and grows with time so later bunches penetrate further into the material. Naeem Tahir

  3. Experiment • Observe “tunneling effect” via camera, detector signal

  4. Experiment • Cu or W target • ~200cm length (LHC-beam depletion front moves 0.35m/us) • 10-15cm radius • Multiple test points • Calibration • Low intensity test • High intensity (full SPS-beam) • Maybe, split into several sections • Enclosed by a shield

  5. Experiment • Instrumentation • Particle physics detectors. • X-rays (density) • Streak camera (time evolution) • Laser interferometer (VISAR) (pressure waves) / Stress gauges • Pyrometry (temperature) • … CVD diamond detector VISAR interferometer

  6. State of the art • Previous Studies • Hydrodynamic Calculation of 20-TeV Beam Interactions with the SSC Beam Dump. D.C.Wilson, C.A.Wingate, J.C.Goldstein, R.P.Godwin and N.V.Mokhov (1992) • Particle accelerator physics and technology for high energy density physics research. D.H.H.Hoffmann et al. (2006) • Interaction of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Beam with the Beam Dump Block. R.Assman, A.Ferrari, B.Goddard, R.Schmidt and N.A.Tahir (2008) • Large Hadron Collider at CERN: Beams generating high-energy-density matter. N.A.Tahir, R.Schmidt et al. (2008) • Previous Experiments • Damage Levels – Comparison of Experiment and Simulation. V.Kain, (2005). • Facilities • FAIR, Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research. (Future)
