  1. WK 3: taping Karst Sub-Marine Springs (KSMS) Michel BAKALOWICZ Perrine FLEURY, PhD student HydroSciences, CNRS Partner no 2 MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  2. Results from experiments • The experiments on the spring taping system and on KSMS data measurement and logging point out that : • The spring must be isolated from seawater, in order to avoid intrusion into the spring or the taping system. • The hydraulic equilibrium between fresh and sea water must be preserved. MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  3. How to tap a KSMS • Isolating the KSMS by covering it with a structure driving the water, pipe or funnel. • The preservation of hydraulic equilibrium is ruled by the 2 following conditions: • Never collect more water than the natural discharge because seawater may be intruding into the taping system (No pumping condition) • Never produce any overpressure at the spring, because freshwater may emerge elsewhere by de-plugging conduits or fractures, creating a new connection with seawater (No de-plugging condition) . MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  4. The KSMS instrumentation Taping structure T-C-P probes Electromagnetic flowmeter Pipe #1 Fresh water overflow The KSMS MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  5. Principles of a taping system (1) • Isolating the KSMS from seawater and piping fresh water • Fresh water flow driven by density difference in the pipe MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  6. Principles of a taping system (2) • Opening of the taping system to the seawater to avoid too important changes of the hydraulic head during floods • Existence of an interface due to different density of fresh and sea water forcing down seawater MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  7. The taping system To the surface Taping a part of the total KSMS flow Pipe # 2 F 1 II F 2 = F1 + F3 F 3 IV III Fresh water – seawater interface Low outflow rate to avoid seawater intrusion F 2 I Pipe #1 MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY KSMS

  8. WP 3 planning (1) • Month 12 : defining the appropriate experimental site • Months 13 to 18 : • Definition of the characteristics of the instrumentation taping system (shape, dimensions, structure, anchoring, materials …) • Building of the structure • Selection of the appropriate probes and data logger • Waterproofing of the equipment MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY

  9. WP 3 planning (2) • Month 18 : Setting of the instrumentation taping • Months 18 to 30 : KSMS monitoring, complementary investigations on the recharge area MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Perrine FLEURY
