A few observations … • The appropriate level of research is a function of both the size of an industry and the growth rate of that industry • Telecom is currently scoring badly on both metrics • Acquisitions drive companies away from investing in research • Why invent new technologies if your products are coming from other companies? • With value shifting away from bandwidth towards uses of bandwidth, there is a shift of research away from components and towards applications and systems. • IPR policies of US universities is not competitive with those of European and Asian universities
