  6. Changes in Music • ambivalent attitudes toward the musical past • a widening gap between “art” and “popular” music • the advent of sound recording (victrola) • the birth of a “world music” culture- when music styles from around the world start to blend together

  7. World Music Sample

  8. The Victrola • If the function is to play back music, how then could this device actually begin to effect music?

  9. Art Music • Art Music • refers to musical traditions implying advanced structural and theoretical considerations • In other words “serious” music with its roots in classical and ballet.

  10. Changes In Artistic Musical Styles (1900s) Anything goes- composers are beginning to break from tradition • all sounds are possible (even no sounds) • new instruments and the sounds of popular music have changed the soundscape of the twentieth century • rhythms and harmony are being experimented with • Improvisation is becoming more popular

  11. Composers of the Twentieth Century • Arnold Schoenberg- 1874-1951 • Known for his pioneering work: • atonality • music that lacks tone, timbre or key- (can sound weird or even bad to some) • Serialism • playing with the order of notes for new sounds • Schoenberg - PierrotLunaire (1-5) - YouTube

  12. Schoenberg - PierrotLunaire 1912

  13. Popular Music • Music designed for pure entertainment • Often to get people to go to a concert or buy the music • What average people are listening to!

  14. Ragtime – 1900-1910 • Ragtime is a style of popular music that began in America • Its main identifying trait is its ragged or syncopated rhythm. • Performing this required great skill, musicians began to “compete” with eachother. • less concerned with musical values, designed as they were to reach a large and undiscriminating audience (not as formal as art music)

  15. Composers of the Twentieth Century Scott Joplin • syncopation • written primarily for piano • not improvised but written down • contains march-like characteristics • bouncy rhythm • generally upbeat • light melodies and satisfying harmonies

  16. Maple Leaf Rag

  17. New Orleans Style (Dixieland)1900-1920′s • After the Civil War, soldiers in the South pawned their instruments • This left a cheap, ready supply of instruments for newly freed slaves. • They formed bands and played out on the streets, a tradition still very much alive in New Orleans.

  18. New Orleans Style (Dixieland)1900-1920′s General Characteristics: • three or four wind instruments • a rhythm section – some combination of piano, tuba, drums, guitar or banjo • trombone outlines harmonic progressions • clarinet improvises above and below main melody • collective improvisation • all instruments solo at once.
