South Korea • History • Came after WWI • 38th parallel was the result of the 1945 agreement • August 15, the new republic was proclaimed and recognized on Dec.12, 1948 • Geography • Slightly larger than Indiana • Lies below the 38th parallel on the Korean Peninsula • Mountainous on the East, west and south are many harbors on the mainland

Malaysia • History • Ancestors of the people first migrated between 2500 and 1500 B.C • Those living in coastal regions had early contact with Chinese and Indians and brought Hinduism • Muslims spread the religion of Islam to Malaysia • Geography • On Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia • Includes Sabah and Sarawak to the east • Slightly exceeds that of New Mexico • Covered by forest, and mountain range

Singapore • History • Inhabitants first migrated between 2500 and 1500 B.C • 1819, the trading post was founded • 1959, attained full internal self-government • On Sept. 16,1963, Singapore joined Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak in the Federation of Malaysia • On Aug. 9, 1965 it withdrew from the Federation • Geography • Off the southern tip of the Malay peninsula • Between the South China Sea and Indian Ocean, and 58 nearby islands

Thailand • History • First settled in the 6th century, and ruled most of the western portion by the 13th century • During the next 400 years they fought the Cambodians and Burmese • 1824, British gained a colonial foothold • At the outbreak of WWII, Japanese attacked Thailand • Geography • Occupies western half of the Indochinese peninsula, and northern two-thirds of the Malay peninsula • Borders Burma in the north and west, Laos on the north, Cambodia on the east, and Malaysia on the south • About the size of France
