Function • Removal of metabolic (cellular) wastes from the body
Metabolic wastes: CO2, H20, salt, nitrogenous wastes (urea)
Lungs • Excrete CO2 & H2O vapor CO2 & H20 vapor
Skin • Excrete urea, salt & water in sweat (perspiration)
Temperature regulation • Evaporation of sweat from skin cools body Maindex
Liver • Produces UREA • Released into blood and then moves to kidneys
Detoxification = waste products, toxins, and drugs removed from the blood
Kidneys a. Filter wastes from blood
b. Maintains water balance in body c. Produces urine
Did you know… • About 440 gallons of blood flow through the kidneys each and every day! • If you eat a lot of red beets, your urine will actually be colored red. • The average person passes 9,202 gallons of urine in his/her lifetime. That’s enough to fill 315 bathtubs.
Kidneys • Blood filtered • Urine produced
Ureters • Transport urine from kidneys to bladder
Urinary Bladder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAy5C2YYlbk • Muscular organ that stores urine
Urethra • Tube that leads urine out of the body
Let’s summarize… • Explain the function of the excretory system. • Explain the difference between excretion and egestion. • Describe the major organs of the excretory system and their functions.
1.Identify A, B, and D. 2.Which organ produces urea? 3.What is the function of D? 4.What does organ A excrete? 5.Which organ detoxifies the blood?
Identify structures A, B, C, and D. • Which structure produces urine? • What is the path of urine? • What are the 2 main functions of A? • What stores urine? • What is the function of D? • Where would kidney stones form?
Which letter in the diagram below indicates the organ that is involved in the production of urea? • Which organ filters urea from the blood?
1. Which letter indicates a structure responsible for filtering urea out of the bloodstream? 2. Which organ contains nephrons? 3. What is the function of D?
Which human excretory structure aids in the maintenance of normal body temperature?
