Part 1: Heritability of Adult Size • Recorded fork length at the time the fish were captured in our trap at Kalama Falls Hatchery. • For size at age issues, parent’s ages from scale analysis, offspring’s ages inferred from pedigrees
Possible Confounding Factors • Steelhead life history is complex • Different ocean years are different environments • Hatchery environment ≠ Natural environment • Influence of environmental variance on h2 unknown
Part 2: Heritability of Run-Timing • Summer-run steelhead return in the summer and fall of the year BEFORE they spawn • Date of return was recorded for wild parents and their hatchery offspring
CONCLUSIONS • H2 of adult size ~ 40% • But, may be confounded by environmental variability • H2 of run timing ~ 85% • Ditto • Future work: • Replication • Comparison between outcomes in hatchery and natural environment
